By most accounts, my car sucks. Most of it is broken, and it’s loud and unsafe. But every once in a while, you’re on a twisty road, with your friend in his Mach 1 behind you, and there’s no other traffic for miles, and it runs absolutely fucking perfect. And everything is right in the world... Have fun this weekend; go for a spirited drive with a friend, no matter what you drive...

What I drive makes no sense as a daily driver: It gets 12 mpg, it takes over 15 seconds to get to 60, tires cost over a grand to replace and last maybe 30k miles, only 2 out of the 8+ speakers work, the exhaust needs replaced, the speedo and odo no longer work, and evasive manuvers are not it’s strong point, but every time I get to hit mud, rocks, dirt, snow, sand, logs, or gravel, I am reminded why I have put up with it for nearly 4 years. It makes me laugh, it makes me forget that I am not where I want to be in life, it makes me forget any past unpleasant experience, it brings me peace. It is a drug, and I’m completely addicted.

I love these Sentras. Beautiful boxy 90s coupe that looks the right kind of dated, well weathered and respected. Not perfect, not exotic, but the kind of car that makes you turn around and remind yourself to respect your elders.

On the outside, I wouldnt change a thing about your car. Wouldnt change the lights, just clean the lenses. Just a great looking example of what the econobox should have been.

I know the feeling 100%. Earlier this week I was about ready to send my car to the junkyard, then I drive it on a twisty road tonight and I wouldn’t trade it for anything

“Most of it is broken, and it’s loud and unsafe.”

Every MG owner, most Jag owners and three Triumph lovers just gave you the “Yup” head nod.

I have thought about selling it a couple of times, but I’ve never been able to pull the trigger. It’s worth more to me than what it’s worth.

Thank you! I was washing it earlier and I stopped for a minute and though the same thing. Maybe it’s just beacuse you don’t see them anymore, or maybe it because it’s a little bit lowered and the trim was painted the same color as the body; but I do think it’s a handsome little car.

Sadly, I still don’t think it’s ready to drive all the way to the east coast for the Oppo meetup this November:(

I’m planning on selling mine next summer, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I got cold feet and held on to it.

I’ve turned down offers for more than we bought it for, I just can’t let it go.

I think a pretty large number of people on Oppo know the feeling.

I took my VR-4 down a sandy twisty fire lane yesterday. It was amazing. Also I am a rally god.

I’m sure a few 944 owners could be thrown in there too. I went the “low hanging fruit” route.

It pays off when people compliment the car. All the money I had to spend and all the delays and busted knuckles getting the car sorted out really pay off when someone tells you they like what you did with it. Its relieving, and takes most of the stress away, if at least temporarily.

No doubt.

It makes me very thankful to have what I need and not what I want.

My appreciation comes from what I don’t have to do to it. With the exception of some electrical issues (speakers aren’t wired and a sensor is bad) everything works. I can absolutely rail on it, thrash it, and just give it hell(offroad, or at least unmaintained dirt roads), and it doesn’t break a sweat. Not only does it make me smile, but it puts a sense of wonder in the passenger, of how the hell nothing broke. The question “How is it not broken?” is the best compliment I could get about it. Making it home 1000 miles through storm after storm, between snow, ice, and rain after unleashing absolute hell on it on multiple occasions during a three month span, was the biggest sense of pride it has given me. Too bad they don’t make Toyota’s like they used to.

You should make a Toyota ad about how they don’t make things like they used to, and just end it on your year Toyota 4Runner: Still Really Damn Good.

Well the next generation was really good as well and notably better in most aspects, so it didn’t end at that. In fact, the 4Runner still is based off the Hilux and the Land Cruiser is a hulk still, so the mechanical quality is still there, but the feel isn’t as much. And they don’t age nearly as well. They need more flared fenders from the factory.

It’s truly unfortunate that you don’t live closer. I’m sure a few of us Oppos could get together and cannonball that sucker into DD condition in a weekend....a couple of the stories I have with Mathias (some that will never be spoken of) are truly impressive with how fast even just two people can get a car back into running condition. Almost scary.

What’s on your to-do list that’s holding you back?

I’m an SR20 convert for sure. For all the problems I’ve had with my car, the engine has always been a diamond in the rough. Never had a problem with it, and the sound doesn’t hurt either.

Major things are struts, brakes, and the wiring harness, but even then, it’s just not a car I’d trust to drive long distances...

I’ll be at the meetup though, just not in the Sentra:)

Struts and brakes are a walk in the park, comparatively. Whats the wiring issue?

Kinja'd!!!0

If I had more time I’d fix them this summer, but I’m leaving for school soon and I just spent quite a bit of money replacing the axles and clutch. The wiring harness is just an absolute mess and I don’t know where to start with that...

Was the car gutted? If I have the wiring diagram (and it may be possible for me to get one for that car), my day job is wiring things....

Sucks that youre so far out and cant easily get the car out here. Id be fully willing to help rewire it if you had any way of getting it closer to this area.

I appreciate it dude! The car isn’t gutted, it was just disassembled and reassembled by someone who had no idea what they were doing.

I don’t know if it’ll ever make its way to the east coast, but stranger things have happened... If so, you’ll be among the first to know!

Kinja'd!!! JGrabowMSt > TheJWT
08/09/2015 at 12:37

Kinja'd!!!1

Well, another option is if the harness is damaged, if you can get the harness out of the car, label what you know and box it up, I work near NYC now, I wouldnt mind going over the whole harness if you needed/wanted.

I have to replace the IAT sensor connector on the HEMIwagon, but first I need to source the connector. Previous owner broke it and zip tied it down, but I dont like it.

Ill ask one of my friends if its possible to get a pdf of the harness. What year is it?

Worst case, you’ll have it for reference if nothing else. Car electricals are certainly daunting, but not really hard. Very time consuming, so you better have an OCD problem that needs a big fix, because this is the perfect fix for OCD.
